Welcome Home!
Feeling welcome in someone’s home is an intangible gift from hostess to visitor. My Grandma Roe shared this gift every day.
If
the door was locked, she wasn’t home. If an extra car wasn’t parked in
front of her house, chances were that she wasn’t home. Barely a day
passed that someone didn’t just stop by… children, grandchildren,
nieces, nephews, neighbors, friends and friends of friends, who were now
her friends. No formal invitation was needed.
She
was the perfect hostess. There was nothing pretentious about her
style. In fact, she probably didn’t know she had a style. She lived
simply, in a one bedroom home. She was garage sale savvy. She reused,
rescued and up-cycled before it was “in”. Looking back, she was a
trendsetter.
What was it about her that made everyone feel at home? Well…
It wasn’t about the house. There were no apologies for dust or dirty dishes. It wasn’t about her, it was about the visit.
It
didn’t matter when you showed up, the coffee pot was on and you were
greeted with a warm gentle hello. But it wasn’t just coffee served or a
friendly welcome. Maybe it was that she never made a big deal out of
having someone drop by. She didn’t hurry around trying to make you
comfortable, you just were because no one was ever a guest really, you
were family.
Walking into Lola’s is like visiting an old friend, one who you simply enjoy and are always welcome.
