CRAFTING A LIFE

[Sewing and Baking and Crafting, oh MY…]

I can’t remember when I wasn’t making something.

Creative phases in random chronological order:
  • Mud Pies (Probably where it started)
  • Prepared for the neighborhood cowboys after a cap gun battle with wild Indians. They didn’t have much of an appetite back then…if only I had perfected my peanut butter cookies at five years old.
  • Clothing Design
  • Kleenex tissue Barbie dresses were all the rage.
  • Crochet
  • Sure teaching an 8 year old isn’t easy. Thanks Mom!
  • Macrame
  • Plant hanger anyone?
  • Bead LoomMy entire allowance went to seed beads. At that time a quarter stretched pretty far.
  • Needlepoint
  • I was the nerdy 7th grade girl who chose classes at the Yarn Nook over piano lessons or sports. AND loved it!
  • Cross stitch
  • Whatever happened to all those Cross Stitch magazines?
  • Sewing
  • Many disasters - lead to success. My thanks to the inventor of the seam ripper!
  • Tole Painting
  • My not so successful attempts lead to a short stint.
Of course these are just a few of the fun things I have tried to conquer.

Several years ago, I traveled to the usual craft fairs, did consignment at a little shop on State Street in Geneva and rented a booth at Brady’s Craft Mall in Orland. I was a busy gal with quite a following. And then one day out of the blue a “real” job opportunity came up. Hmm real job… weekly paycheck without the seasonal highs and lows. No 2 am rushes to get that last project completed. No tromping in the snow at 6 a.m. to setup at a craft fair… time for a reinvention. I jumped at the chance… and soon my sewing time slowly dwindled to the necessary. I enjoyed thirteen years as an ad rep for the Morris Daily Herald. But, I was missing my creative chaos.

So… Last year I started a new business, Someday Violet. In February, I found Lola’s. Now with much enthusiasm, I am preparing to open my own little boutique inside this store.

What you will find tucked away in Someday Violet’s
whimsical corner of the world:

Handmade sewn items created with care, each featuring my unique style. From fragrant lavender sachets and eye pillows for mom - to book bags and puppet theaters for the kids, Violet offers a unique variety of items utilizing quality vintage and new fabrics from my ever growing and eclectic textile collection. Of course there will be some fun vintage home decor finds to tempt you.

Check out my new spot during Girls Night Out on May 10th….and don’t forget the Three French Hens Market on the 12th.
